Quicksand in
the city
It was seven o'clock in the morning and, as
usual, I was beginning my daily training: in fact, I had taken the habit, at first to
"be contacted" by the Thieves Guild, and then to improve my ability as well as
my reputation in that organisation, to pickpocket some people in the streets. After
shielding myself with an invisibility (true type, of course) spell, I began to approach
some folks and practice my thieving skills, cautiously slipping my hand in their pocket or
carefully cutting their purse from their belt.
It didn't take long before one of them noticed me and started yelling: "Thief!!!
Guards, help me!!! I have been robbed!!!" In a while, all the people were gone, and
that side of the city was occupied by guards instead... But they could do nothing other
than stand still, for the presumed scoundrel was nowhere to be seen! They was continually
shouting "Halt!" but were not sure themselves to whom that order could be
directed... and obviously I was there, amidst them, with a pleased smile on my face.
But the game was lasting too long, so I decided to be on my way, just the time to get out
of the city and be back, when all would be calm once again. I had to cross the city walls,
though, so thanks to a levitate spell I lifted myself over their heads; while I was
flying, I looked down to enjoy the faces of the dull guards, and I noticed that one of
them was beginning to "sink" into the earth (and he was standing on solid
ground, not on a pond or something like that)! Puzzled by the strange event, I went a bit
closer, just to find out that the men was deeper in. I landed at a distance of some feet
and, immediately, the man-at-arms was in front of me, in his full height... More puzzled
than before, I decided to overlook this fact, for it could prevent my escape. I had lost
so much time staring at it that my cloaking spell was wearing off. Once again I began to
levitate... and the guard began to sink at the same time, and the more I went up, the more
he was pulled down until his head was completely beneath the ground; one moment later his
corpse reappeared, with all his armour and belongings. I had not killed him, actually (and
in fact my reputation was not affected at all), but I preferred to be on my way at once,
lest I could be accused of a murder I had not committed.
But the queerest thing about this strange event was that it took place not in a jungle
province like, let's say, Totambu, but in a mild region as Daggerfall, where I could never
imagine to encounter...quicksand!!!
