The
tale of
the harpy that posed as a city guard
I had been sent by the Fighters Guild to
carry out what is considered a most ordinary mission: an animal had gotten into a
residence nearby and I was meant to kill it; as a final warning, the quester yelled that
the beast was an harpy, so I rummaged through the stuff loaded on my cart and took a
dwarven mace, for I knew this was the only weapon I had that could harm the creature.
I arrived to the house and upstairs I found the harpy; I was cloaked in my usual shroud of
invisibility, so I silently sneaked to the creature's back. I was about to strike it with
a powerful blow when I realized that this could be a good chance to test my pickpocketing
skills (and gain some easy coins as well); I carefully put my hand in a patch of feathers
, but my action was unsuccessful. The creature didn't seem to notice, but I heard a bunch
of guards downstairs shouting their annoying "Halt!". I decided I would deal
with them later (probably avoiding them altogether and making directly for the
exit) and focused my attention on the object of my mission. The harpy was still in front
of me, unaware of my presence, so I raised my mace and struck. Blood spilled from the
beast's side, but now the creature knew I was behind it, even if it could not see beyond
my cloak of invisibility (probably it could smell or hear me). The harpy turned around and
tried to hit me; I was unable to dodge and I felt one of its claws tore into my flesh; it
was just a superficial wound and I was not worried at all, at least until a moment after,
when I heard a squeaking voice: the harpy was asking me if I wanted to surrender to the
city guards!!!
* Writer's note: of course, I mean that the well-known pop-up window
appeared*
Still puzzled, I decided to throw down my weapon and see how the events would develop...
needless to say, I was brought in front of a court to face a charge of pickpocketing...
arrested by a harpy that sided with the city guards!!!
