Tob's orb
[Kender Gender] [Tob's character sheet] [Tob's Background] [Tob's achievements] [Tob's companions]

I was only 15 when my dear grannie, following the famous kender saying that goes: "A time comes when one has to throw out the cat, lock the door, slip the key under the door-mat and be on his way", went away looking for adventure; but, instead of throwing out the cat, she threw out ME!!!

My dear grannie was everything I had left, for my parents had died when the dragonarmies attacked Kendermore; nevertheless, they told me that, before passing away, they cut a really good figure!

Anyway, after a merry kender infancy, I suddenly found myself alone... not that I was worried about it (kenders are used to make shift), but the first idea I came up with was... er... to tail my dear grannie; unfortunately  she was too clever and I could do nothing but losing the track after no more than one hour...

So, as any good kender would do, I followed my instincts and continued on the same direction until I reached a quiet village of tall folks (humans); probably they did not like me very much, for it seemed they were trying to avoid me as if I were a leper (well, actually when I was a child I had contracted mumps and then I communicated them to each and every friend of mine; I also got chicken-pox, but that was all fault of Darnil Longears); the only one who seemed to like me was the village seer; he took me with him for some weeks, offering me board and lodging; in turn he requested me just a little favour: I had to guide him while he, with his hand on my shoulder, was going around accomplishing his duties. It seemed to me that everytime the villagers saw us coming they were about to tell him something, but, probably because of the respect they had towards him, they abstained from doing it... I wonder what they wanted to say; sometimes humans are so queer...

Anyway after a couple of weeks I got bored of that routine and I decided to move on with my adventuring; exiting the village, I noticed that a strange object had fallen (who knows how) in my deep pockets: a crystal orb that lay abandoned on the center of the table in the old man's house. I took it between my hands andscanned it in the deep, where I thought I had seen a swirling mist; suddenly I remembered the words of uncle Tas when he was speaking about the various Dragon Orbs he ahd seen and... er... handled. My hands were shaking for the thrill as I was just thinking about using such a powerful artifact, but... what the Abyss! Don't they say that "curiosity is kender"? I placed my hands on the orb's surface and I concentrated, staring at a fixed point inside of it and I saw...

* Writer's note: I won't recount here what Tobold saw because the DM hasn't decided it yet; the only thing I can say is that it is a scene of Tob's future... or at least he assumed that it was so *

I was so amazed that I let go the orb... it fell and shattered into countless tiny fragments... what a loss for entire humanity!

Full of sadness, I went on my way...
