Kender Gender
[Tob's character sheet] [Tob's Background] [Tob's achievements] [Tob's companions]

If you ever read Dragonlance™ you already know who I'm talking about ;-)

If not, well, maybe you read "The Lord of the Rings": hobbits and kenders are very much alike, with some differences I will explain later on.

If you did not even read "The Lord of the Rings", what are you doing here??? This page speaks about fantasy, and if you read none of the above, it's likely you never read fantasy at all ;o)

Kenders are demi-humans; they are childish, both in appearance and character, and even shorter than dwarves, measuring around 4 feet in height. They are virtually fearless, but the trait they are most known for is their kleptomania. This and their annoying nature makes them one of the most (if not the most) feared race on the face of Krynn;on the other hand they are friendly (too much, some say) and provide great companionship (if one can stand their endless stream of words and questions) and wonderful tales (the most are fabricated).

The origins of kenders can be found at the time during which the gnomes were sieging the castle of the warlock Gargath, trying to retrieve a powerful artifact known as the Gray Gem; I will not recount the story here in full (you may find it in various Dragonlanec™ books): I will say only that when the gem was freed, a strange light irradiated from it, mutating some of the gnomes and creating two brand new races: dwarves and gnomes.

Those who read "the Lord of the Rings" surely noticed that hobbits  and kenders are very similar: both look like children, both are light-hearted, both are stealthy. It must be noted, though, that there are also great differences: while kenders are known for their wanderlust, hobbits are strongly bound to their homes; physhically kenders are slim and thin-boned, hobbits are chubby and tend to grow pot-bellied.

Why did I wrote all this stuff about kenders, you are asking? Well, it's quite simple: the character I'm now playing in AD&D is a kender, and I'm enjoying it very much. He is called Tobold Lightfinger (those who read my story "Pipe-weed" know where the name comes from; for those who didn't, well, I invite them to do it now ;o) ); here you can find everything you'd want to know about him

A final note: Beware a bored kender! It's one of the most destructive things in the world!
